Overview

Technology in AgriTech

Agriculture runs on data now: yield maps, machine telemetry, soil and weather sensors and satellite imagery. It only pays off when that data is collected, matched to the right field and shown in a form a grower can act on in time.

Desmata builds the data pipelines, geospatial processing and field-ready applications that agritech products need, and staffs the data engineers, GIS analysts and IoT developers who run them.

The geospatial skills behind RetailGeo Insights, our own location intelligence platform for retailers, apply directly to field boundaries, imagery and spatial analysis.

Challenges

What technology leaders here are dealing with

  1. Challenge 1: Data in too many formats

Machinery, farm management systems and sensor vendors each export their own formats, from ISOXML to shapefiles to proprietary files. Matching them to one field and season takes engineering time.

  2. Challenge 2: Connectivity in the field

Sensors and apps work in places with weak coverage. Devices and mobile apps need to store data locally, sync when they can and recover cleanly from gaps.

  3. Challenge 3: Imagery volume and quality

Public satellites such as Sentinel-2 revisit every few days, but clouds and resolution limit what is usable. Pipelines must pick usable scenes and turn them into field-level indicators without huge compute bills.

  4. Challenge 4: Grower trust in data use

Farmers expect clear terms on who owns, shares and sells their data. Platforms that cannot show this struggle to sign up growers and partners.

  5. Challenge 5: A narrow seasonal window

A bug in planting or spraying season costs more than at other times of year. Releases, testing and support have to be planned around the farming calendar.

How we help

Where Desmata fits in

Use cases

What we deliver in this sector

  • Field boundary and yield data ingestion

Pipelines that bring machine files and farm management exports into a consistent field, crop and season model.

  • Satellite crop monitoring

Vegetation index time series per field, with alerts when growth departs from the expected pattern.

  • IoT sensor networks

Soil moisture, weather station and irrigation data collected over cellular or LoRaWAN links, with device health monitoring.

  • Offline-first scouting and record apps

Mobile apps that capture photos, notes and locations without signal and sync when connectivity returns.

  • Machinery and telematics integration

Connecting equipment data to farm management systems so operations records build themselves.

  • Traceability and sustainability reporting

Field-level records organized for buyers and programs that ask for practice and input history.

Regulations and standards

Standards we design for

The rules that shape technology work in this sector, and that we build and staff around.

  • Privacy and Security Principles for Farm Data

The industry's Core Principles cover data ownership, notice, portability and use limits, and Ag Data Transparent offers a program built on them. We design consent and data-sharing features that follow these principles.

  • AgGateway ADAPT

ADAPT is an open framework for converting precision agriculture data between formats and systems. We work with it when building import and export pipelines.

  • ISO 11783 (ISOBUS and ISOXML)

The standard for communication between tractors and implements, with an XML format for task data. We read and write it when integrating machinery data.

  • OGC and open geospatial standards

Standards for formats and services, such as GeoPackage, WMS and WFS, along with community specifications like STAC for imagery catalogs, keep spatial data portable. We build with them.

  • FAA Part 107

Commercial drone operations in the US follow Part 107 rules. We design drone imagery workflows with that in mind and leave flight operations to licensed operators.

These are the regulations and standards that shape work in this sector. We design and staff for them. They are not certifications held by Desmata.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Desmata have agritech customers?

We list agritech as an industry we serve and staff for, and we do not publish customer results for it on this page. Our geospatial work on RetailGeo Insights, our own product for retailers, uses the same core skills.

Can you work with satellite and drone imagery?

Yes. We build pipelines that select usable scenes, compute vegetation indices and store results per field, using public sources such as Sentinel-2 and Landsat or commercial imagery you license. Drone flights stay with licensed operators.

How do you handle formats from different machinery brands?

We build converters around open standards such as ISOXML and ADAPT where they apply, and write adapters for proprietary exports. The result is one field-level model your product can rely on.

Can you staff people for a seasonal build?

Yes. Contract roles suit work timed around planting and harvest. Tell us the season, skills and team size and a recruiter will confirm what is realistic.

Turn field data into decisions growers can use

Share what data you collect and what you want growers to see. We will propose a pipeline, an app approach and the team to build it.
