Overview

Technology in Retail

Retail technology teams have three jobs at once. Keep stores and web running through peak season, make online and in-store inventory agree, and show that every system earns its cost. Desmata builds and staffs for all three.

We work across the commerce stack: storefronts, order management, POS, merchandising and planning systems, and the data layer underneath them. Our engineers understand why a stale inventory count or a messy returns rule costs you a sale.

Retail is also where we build our own product. RetailGeo Insights, our geospatial platform for store location decisions, is in development, and it shapes how our team works with location data for retailers.

Challenges

What technology leaders here are dealing with

  1. Challenge 1: Inventory that disagrees across channels

Buy online and pick up in store, and ship from store, only work when order management, POS and warehouse systems agree on what is on the shelf. Duplicate item masters and slow syncs turn promises to customers into cancelled orders.

  2. Challenge 2: Peak-season load

Holiday traffic exposes slow checkout, fragile promotion engines and third-party scripts that block the page. Load testing, caching and release freezes need to be planned months ahead, not weeks.

  3. Challenge 3: Card data and privacy scope

PCI DSS 4.0.1 now expects control of scripts on payment pages and multi-factor authentication into the cardholder data environment. State privacy laws add rules for loyalty and marketing data, and a growing scope means more audit effort and more breach risk.

  4. Challenge 4: Forecasts that planners do not trust

Demand forecasting and markdown models fail when sales, promotion, weather and inventory data sit in separate systems. Planners fall back on spreadsheets and the model never gets used.

  5. Challenge 5: Store decisions made on thin evidence

Opening, moving or closing a store is a long bet. Many teams still rely on static trade-area reports that miss foot traffic shifts, competitor proximity and local demographics.

How we help

Where Desmata fits in

Use cases

What we deliver in this sector

  • Unified inventory and order orchestration

One available-to-promise view across stores, distribution centers and marketplaces, with clear rules for ship-from-store, pickup and split shipments.

  • Checkout and payments modernization

Faster checkout, wallet and buy-now-pay-later integration, tokenized card storage and controls for scripts on payment pages.

  • POS and store systems

Mobile POS rollouts, store-to-ERP integration, returns and exchange rules, and offline mode that keeps the register working when the network does not.

  • Demand forecasting and replenishment

Item-by-store forecasts that feed allocation, replenishment and markdown timing, with accuracy tracked against what actually sold.

  • Location intelligence and site selection

Trade-area analysis, demographic heatmaps and competitor proximity views to support opening, relocation and closure decisions. This is the same kind of analysis behind RetailGeo Insights.

  • Customer data and loyalty analytics

Identity resolution, consent management and segmentation that respect state privacy rules, so marketing uses data you are allowed to use.

Regulations and standards

Standards we design for

The rules that shape technology work in this sector, and that we build and staff around.

  • PCI DSS 4.0.1

The card industry standard for anyone who stores, processes or transmits payment data. We design systems to reduce scope and support your assessment, and we staff engineers who have worked inside PCI environments.

  • CCPA and state privacy laws

California and a growing list of states give shoppers rights over how loyalty, browsing and purchase data is used. We build consent, access and deletion handling into customer data systems.

  • ADA and WCAG

Storefronts and apps face accessibility claims, and WCAG is the working yardstick. We build and test to WCAG guidelines so checkout works for everyone.

  • GS1 standards

GTINs and barcode standards keep item data consistent across suppliers, stores and marketplaces. We work with them when cleaning product and inventory data.

  • TCPA for text marketing

Consent rules for SMS campaigns affect how loyalty and CRM platforms are configured. We design opt-in and opt-out records so they can be shown when asked.

These are the regulations and standards that shape work in this sector. We design and staff for them. They are not certifications held by Desmata.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you work with our existing commerce platform?

Yes. We start from what you run today, whether that is Shopify Plus, Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud or a custom build. We add integrations, performance work and new features without forcing a replatform.

Does Desmata handle PCI DSS compliance for us?

PCI DSS obligations stay with your organization and your payment providers. We design systems that reduce what is in scope and produce the evidence your assessor asks for, and we can staff engineers with PCI experience.

How fast can you add retail developers or analysts?

Timing depends on the role and seniority. Tell us the stack and start date, and a recruiter will confirm what is realistic and share profiles for your review.

Is RetailGeo Insights available to buy?

RetailGeo Insights is in development. If location intelligence is on your roadmap, talk to us about your use case and we can discuss how the platform and our consulting fit.

Can you take on a project rather than just supply people?

Yes. We deliver projects and managed teams with a named delivery lead, or we supply individual contractors to work inside your team. Many clients mix the two.
