Overview

Technology in Manufacturing

Manufacturers depend on ERP, MES and plant systems that must stay in step with each other, and downtime on the line costs real money. Many are also collecting machine data to improve quality, uptime and planning, while connecting more of the plant to the network.

Desmata modernizes manufacturing systems, builds data and analytics on top of them, secures the connections and staffs the ERP, MES and data roles each project needs. The aim is fewer outages, faster planning cycles and an audit trail you can show.

Manufacturing is one of our priority sectors. Defense suppliers also get help with the security expectations that flow down from prime contracts.

Challenges

What technology leaders here are dealing with

  1. Challenge 1: ERP end of maintenance

SAP has set 2027 as the end of mainstream maintenance for ECC, and many manufacturers are still deciding how to move to S/4HANA. A multi-site migration takes planning, data cleanup and people who have done it before.

  2. Challenge 2: Plant systems that do not talk to the business

MES, SCADA and quality systems often connect to ERP through brittle custom links or manual entry. Planners work with late or wrong data, and schedules slip.

  3. Challenge 3: OT security and connected equipment

Remote vendor access, unpatched controllers and flat networks are common in plants. A ransomware event can stop production, not just email.

  4. Challenge 4: Supply chain visibility

Disruptions, supplier delays and demand swings need near-real-time data. Many teams still plan from weekly spreadsheets.

  5. Challenge 5: Customer and contract security demands

Defense suppliers face NIST 800-171 and CMMC. Others face security questionnaires from large customers. Both need evidence, not promises.

How we help

Where Desmata fits in

Use cases

What we deliver in this sector

  • ECC to S/4HANA migration support

Assess custom code and data, plan waves by site, and staff the functional and technical team.

  • MES to ERP integration

Send production confirmations, material usage and quality results to ERP in near real time.

  • Plant performance dashboards

Show OEE, downtime causes and scrap trends from machine data, with drill-down to line and shift.

  • Supply chain visibility layer

Combine supplier, inventory and logistics data to flag shortages and late shipments before they stop a line.

  • Plant security assessment

Review remote access, segmentation, backups and monitoring at the IT and OT boundary and produce a ranked plan.

  • Defense supplier readiness work

Map systems to NIST 800-171 controls, fix technical gaps and keep evidence organized for assessors.

Regulations and standards

Standards we design for

The rules that shape technology work in this sector, and that we build and staff around.

  • NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC

Security requirements for suppliers handling controlled unclassified information under defense contracts. We help suppliers prepare their systems and staff people experienced in the control families.

  • IEC 62443

The industrial automation and control systems security series. We use its zones and conduits when designing connections between plant and business networks.

  • ISA-95

The standard model for integrating enterprise and control systems. We design ERP to MES interfaces around it.

  • NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0

A common structure for assessing and improving cyber risk, with manufacturing-focused guidance available. We use it to organize assessments and plans.

  • SOX IT general controls

Public manufacturers must show that changes to financial systems are controlled. We build change and access evidence into ERP work.

These are the regulations and standards that shape work in this sector. We design and staff for them. They are not certifications held by Desmata.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you help us move from SAP ECC to S/4HANA?

Yes. We can support assessment, data migration, testing and cutover, and staff consultants and ABAP developers for the program. The right approach depends on your sites, custom code and timeline.

Do you work on plant-floor systems?

We focus on the systems and data that connect the plant to the business, including MES and ERP integration. Control-level changes follow your engineering and change process, and we can staff people with plant experience.

Can you help a defense supplier with CMMC?

We can assess systems against NIST 800-171, build technical fixes and staff security roles. Formal assessment and certification is done by authorized third parties, and Desmata does not hold CMMC status.

How fast can you supply ERP or MES talent?

It depends on the platform, modules and location, so we start with a short call. Contract staffing is the quickest route, and contract-to-hire is common for permanent roles.

Can you give us supply chain visibility without replacing our ERP?

Often yes. A data layer that reads from ERP, warehouse, supplier and logistics sources can give planners one view without a replacement. We scope it against your biggest delays first.

Keep lines running and your data honest

Tell us about your ERP, plant or supply chain priority. We will respond with a scope, the risks we see and the team you would need.
