Overview

Technology in Energy

Energy companies manage large asset bases, field crews and control systems, and their business IT has to work alongside operational technology without putting it at risk. Reliability and safety come first, and cyber rules for the sector keep growing.

Desmata supports the IT side of that picture: asset and field systems, operational analytics, cloud migration and cybersecurity, plus the engineers and analysts to staff them. Our work focuses on the connections between operational data and business systems.

We stay on the right side of the boundary. OT changes follow your engineering and change control, and we staff people experienced in operational environments where that is needed.

Challenges

What technology leaders here are dealing with

  1. Challenge 1: A wider attack surface as IT and OT connect

Remote access, vendor connections and data feeds link business networks to control systems. Attackers target those links, and an incident can affect operations as well as data.

  2. Challenge 2: Asset and field systems that lag the field

Work orders, inspections and asset records often live in separate systems and paper. Crews lose time, and planners cannot see true asset condition.

  3. Challenge 3: Sensor and meter data nobody can use

Smart meters, SCADA historians and sensors produce huge volumes. Without a governed data platform, analytics stay in one-off projects.

  4. Challenge 4: Growing reliability and security evidence

NERC CIP now reaches low impact assets, vendor remote access and internal network monitoring. Pipeline operators work under TSA security directives. Teams need records that stand up to review.

  5. Challenge 5: An aging workforce and thin IT bench

Experienced operators are retiring, and IT staff who understand both enterprise systems and operations are hard to find.

How we help

Where Desmata fits in

Use cases

What we deliver in this sector

  • Mobile work order and inspection app

Replace paper and re-keying with a field app that writes to the asset system, with offline support for remote sites.

  • Predictive maintenance analytics

Combine sensor, historian and work order data to flag assets likely to fail, and prioritize crews accordingly.

  • Meter and grid data platform

Land AMI and distribution data on a governed platform for load, outage and loss analysis.

  • Secure remote and vendor access review

Map how vendors and staff connect, close unnecessary paths and add monitoring and records for the rest.

  • ERP and asset system cloud migration

Move SAP and maintenance workloads to cloud in phases, with tested rollback and a clear cutover plan.

Regulations and standards

Standards we design for

The rules that shape technology work in this sector, and that we build and staff around.

  • NERC CIP

The reliability standards for the bulk electric system, covering access, monitoring, recovery and supply chain risk. We design to the requirements that apply to your assets and staff people experienced in them.

  • TSA pipeline security directives

Pipeline owners and operators work under TSA directives on cyber risk, segmentation and reporting. We work within them on enterprise-side systems and connections.

  • IEC 62443

The industrial automation and control systems security series. We use its zone and conduit thinking when designing connections between business and control networks.

  • NIST SP 800-82 and NIST CSF 2.0

NIST guidance for securing operational technology and for managing cyber risk. We use it to structure assessments and plans.

  • DOE Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model (C2M2)

A maturity model that energy organizations use to rate and improve cyber capability. We map assessment findings to it when you ask.

These are the regulations and standards that shape work in this sector. We design and staff for them. They are not certifications held by Desmata.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you work on control systems directly?

We focus on enterprise IT and the data and connections around operations. Changes to control systems follow your OT engineering and change control, and we can staff people with experience in those environments.

Can you help us prepare for NERC CIP reviews?

We can assess the enterprise-side systems, access and monitoring that feed your evidence, and help build records that are easy to produce. Compliance decisions and filings stay with your compliance team.

Do you serve oil and gas as well as utilities?

Yes. Both run asset, field and operational data systems and both face OT security pressure, although the rules differ. We tailor teams to the segment.

How do you protect operational data during a cloud move?

We design segmentation, identity controls and logging before data moves, and migrate in phases with rollback plans. Control networks stay separate from enterprise cloud workloads.

Can you supply short-term project staff?

Yes. Contract staffing fits outage-season peaks and system rollouts, and contract-to-hire or direct hire fit permanent needs.
