Overview

About Digital Product Engineering

Desmata designs and builds custom software for companies that have outgrown packaged tools. We cover architecture, full-stack development, web and mobile apps, and the integrations that connect them to the systems you already run. Every product starts with the users and the business problem, not a technology list.

We build API-first, use microservices where the domain calls for them, and package services in containers so they deploy the same way in every environment. Releases are small and reviewed with you as they are built. You see working software early, not at the end.

Older systems are part of the job. We modernize legacy applications in stages, replacing one capability at a time, so the business keeps running while the platform changes. Our own product, RetailGeo Insights, is built with the same methods.

Outcomes

What you get

  • A useful first release sooner

We scope a thin first release around the one problem that matters most, then add to it in small steps. Your users react to real software, not slides.

  • Architecture that can change

API-first services with clear boundaries let you add channels, partners and features without rewriting the core.

  • Fewer surprises in production

Automated tests, CI/CD pipelines and containerized deployment catch problems before your customers do.

  • Old and new systems that connect

Your new product and your existing platforms exchange data through documented APIs instead of manual exports.

Capabilities

What we do, in detail

  • Custom software architecture

Designs sized to your load, your team and your budget.

    • Domain-driven design and service boundaries
    • API-first design with OpenAPI contracts
    • Event-driven patterns where they pay off
    • Architecture decision records your team can maintain
  • Full-stack development

One team across the front end, back end and data layer.

    • React and Next.js front ends in TypeScript
    • Java, .NET, Node.js and Python back ends
    • Relational and NoSQL data stores
    • Authentication, roles and audit trails built in from the start
  • Web and mobile applications

Cross-platform apps that share logic and feel native.

    • Responsive web apps and progressive web apps
    • Cross-platform mobile with React Native and Flutter
    • Native iOS and Android where device features demand it
    • Interfaces designed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA targets
  • Containerized deployment

The same build runs on a laptop, in test and in production.

    • Docker images and Kubernetes manifests
    • CI/CD pipelines with automated test gates
    • Environment parity from development to production
    • Logs, metrics and traces for every service
  • Legacy modernization and systems integration

Move forward without a risky big-bang rewrite.

    • Strangler-pattern migration of monolithic applications
    • Re-platforming of .NET Framework and Java EE applications
    • Integration with ERP, CRM and payment systems through APIs and message queues
    • Data migration with reconciliation checks

Approach

How an engagement runs

  1. Step 1: Discover

We define the users, the problem and what a first useful release looks like, and agree how success will be measured.

  2. Step 2: Design

Architecture, data model and interface designs are reviewed with you before the build scales up.

  3. Step 3: Build in small releases

Short iterations produce working software you can test, with automated tests and code review on every change.

  4. Step 4: Release and harden

We deploy through CI/CD, test performance and security, and watch the first production traffic closely.

  5. Step 5: Evolve

Usage data and feedback drive the backlog. You can continue with us, with your own team, or with both.

Engagement models

Ways to work with us

  • Fixed-scope project

A defined product or release with agreed outcomes, delivered by a Desmata team.

  • Dedicated product team

A managed team of engineers, QA and a delivery lead that works your backlog over time.

  • Staff augmentation

Individual engineers or architects added to your team, under your management.

  • Modernization assessment

A short study of a legacy system that ends in a staged migration plan.

Technology and talent

Technology and talent together

The same firm that builds your product can staff it. If you need extra hands on a team you run, our recruiters place engineers who have already worked on the stacks above.

Roles we can also staff

  • Solutions architect
  • Full-stack engineer
  • Java developer
  • .NET developer
  • Mobile engineer (React Native, Flutter, native)
  • QA automation engineer
  • DevOps engineer
  • UX and UI designer
  • Product owner
  • Delivery lead or scrum master

Need the people as well as the plan?

The engineers who design the work and the specialists who join your team come from one firm.

Why Desmata

Why Desmata

  • Built for you, not templated

We design around your users, data and systems. No reskinned starter kit and no fixed platform you have to fit into.

  • Engineering and staffing in one firm

Scale the team up or down without changing vendors, and keep one accountable contact for delivery.

  • Measured by outcomes

We agree KPIs at the start, such as conversion, cycle time or manual effort removed, and report against them.

  • Onshore, nearshore and offshore options

Work with a Plano-based lead and extend capacity through the delivery model that fits your budget and time zones.

Our work in practice

Our product

RetailGeo Insights

RetailGeo Insights is Desmata's own geospatial intelligence platform for retailers, currently in development. It is designed for location optimization, demographic heatmapping and competitive proximity analysis, on scalable cloud infrastructure with machine-learning trend predictions. Building it keeps our engineering practice honest, and we apply the same methods to client work.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you build on a fixed platform or from scratch?

We choose the stack to suit your problem, your team and your existing systems. Where a proven component fits, such as an identity service or a payment gateway, we use it instead of rebuilding it.

Can you work alongside our in-house developers?

Yes. We can embed engineers in your team, take a defined slice of the backlog, or run a separate team that follows your standards. We agree code review, branching and release practices at the start.

Who owns the code?

Ownership and licensing terms are set in the contract before work begins. We work in repositories you can access and document the architecture so the code can be maintained by your team or another vendor.

How do you modernize a legacy application without stopping the business?

We migrate in stages, usually by placing APIs in front of the old system and moving one capability at a time behind them. Each stage is tested with reconciliation checks, and the old path stays available until the new one has proved itself.

Do you build AI features into products?

Yes, when they add real value, such as document understanding, recommendations or forecasting. Our data and AI engineers work in the same team as the product engineers, so models ship as part of the product and not as a side experiment.

Have a product to build or a system to modernize?

Tell us the problem and who it is for. A Desmata engineer will respond with questions, a suggested first release and the roles needed to deliver it.
